Just American News got a chance to interview Marie Solimena in regard to her career and upcoming projects. We got insights into her source of inspiration and much more!
Q. First of all, welcome! It is wonderful to have you on our platform. How are you doing?
Marie Solimena: I’m doing really well thank you! I’m excited to be here with you guys. How are you doing?
Q. Great! Your work in theatre is phenomenal. How did you embark on this journey?
Marie Solimena:I started dreaming about working in theatre and becoming an actress at the age of 8, after watching a theatre production of The Wizard Of Oz in my hometown, Genova, in Italy. I remember being transported in a different reality thanks to the actors, and once the lights turned back on I couldn’t believe that I was still in the same seat as before in a black room, I wanted to learn to do that as well! To transport people to a different world for a couple of hours and change their day.
After that, I begged my parents to enroll me in a theatre school in Genova where I studied and performed from 2008 to 2017.
Q. Please share your experience in working in plays such as L’Oreste and Pericles.
Marie Solimena: Working on those two plays was quite demanding and hard. The director, Oreste Talent, was very precise and demanding and everything had to be the way he wanted, therefore perfect! However, we only had 3 weeks to put each show together. We would rephrase in Porto Venere, Italy. After those three weeks, we would start our journey around Liguria (a region in Italy) and we would perform in an open-air theatre. The atmosphere was magical, but it required even more skills than to perform in a regular theatre since we had to project more and the spaces were bigger, voice & movement were particularly important when performing in these two shows.
Q. Any specific creative process that you follow while you are working on a film or a play to get into your character’s psyche?
Marie Solimena: I personally love the Meisner technique because it brings the focus on me and brings me to the right stake for the scene. I also love the Chekov movement technique. This one I usually use when I can’t seem to access my emotions, it can happen, we are all humans after all!
Q. Personally, what motivates you and what inspires you in life?
Marie Solimena: My biggest motivation to reach my goals is my purpose. I have a purpose with my acting and that’s why I want to continue working in this field. I feel the need to tell stories about women and portray these complicated and deep characters in order to show the world what can be going on in someone’s life.
Q. Who has been a major influence in your life?
Marie Solimena: One movie that has really influenced the way I want to do my art was “A Woman Under The Influence”, especially because of Gena Rowlands Performance.
Q. Any tips or advice for aspiring actresses?
Marie Solimena: Do not give up. You shouldn’t get scared of doors slammed in your face. It happens every day. And if there was a no, the next one will be a yes.
Q. Please share with us your favorite scene from a movie and why do you like that scene?
Marie Solimena: A scene that I really like from A Marriage Story, is when they argue about divorce. It seems like both of them want to get a divorce but at the same time, they do not as they still care so much for each other. I love how high the stakes are and the commitment of both actors, it kind of looks like everything was improvised, it felt that real! I would love to take in a role like the one of Scarlett Johansson in this movie in the future!
Q. What lies ahead for you in the coming years? What next?
Marie Solimena: I’m currently working on a web series called “I, Angel” that talks about toxic and violent relationships, and a feature entitled “Believe”.
Q. Lastly, do you have any closing thoughts that you would like to share with the world and our readers?
Marie Solimena: I just truly love what I do and I’m happy to know that mine is a job that I will be able to carry on and keep growing from it for the rest of my life.
