Seeking control of our careers is something we all strive to achieve. This breeds a flood of entrepreneurs, who want the best out of their lives. They long for vacations whenever they want, making the big decisions, and making all the money. Unfortunately, some find out that path is narrow and much more arduous then they previously thought. Many give up and stop pursuing their goals. On the other hand, many continue through the hardships, persevere and make their dreams reality. For best selling author Christopher Laird, he wanted to seek control of his work. He is fully confident that his books will become a major motion picture. His books have already become a hit stage play and he anticipates more is on the way.
“I wanted to make sure that I have complete creative control of all of my work,” says Laird. “I want my characters to continue to be the characters that I created and not let them be corrupted by someone else who I sold the rights to.”
Christopher Laird has written the best selling ORIGINS series and his new book, ORIGINS 4: The Rise Of Mykia, will be out September 6th. It is a story about a particle that is from God himself, and everyone is after it. It allows anyone who possess it, to have the powers of God and do whatever they wish. As we find out, killer aliens want it too and this is where the fun happens. In ORIGINS 4, the battle takes place back in time, which is 1953 in the United States. The U.S government has the particle and the military from the 28th century tries to intercept the aliens from the same time to stop them. Laird’s goal is not to only create fun stories, but to have control of his work at the end of the day.
“I want to make a large portion of the money and have creative control,”Laird continues. ” I have seen too many individuals not make money off their work and have the higher ups control their story. It is very tempting to take the money up front, but I did not want to give up my creative freedom and the profits to someone else, who is likely to make more than me off the material I created. My belief is it is your work and you should control it and where it should go. Because once you sell your rights, it will be almost impossible to get it back. And while your story may make millions, you’ll be lucky to get a quarter of that.”
Laird had some parting advice for authors or anyone who creates something. “This is your work, your vision, and you put everything into this. If you want to sell your rights for your work, I thinks that’s fine if that is your goal. But I like to follow the lead of George Lucas, Tyler Perry, J.K Rowling and others. They made millions, in some cases billions off their work. That’s where I want to be.”
