Australian singer and songwriter India Dupriez has made major strides in the music industry as an artist who was undiscovered less than two years ago. Making progress by winning eisteddfods competitions just eighteen months ago, India is now working with the industry’s hottest record producers and has music featured on Spotify’s ‘New Artist Spotlight’ playlists. Based in Australia’s Gold Coast, the young musician has taken her passion for singing to the next level, as she climbs the charts. We dive into the artist’s background to track her progress and find out how she got to where she is today.
Born in Sydney, but raised in Queensland from the age of six, India grew up with a beach life full of nature, warmth, love, and inspiration. By the age of twelve, and entirely untrained with no musical background, she was auditioning for local theater productions where she found her natural gift. Raised in a family of musically inclined individuals, she was introduced to the work of seminal musicians at a young age, in a house that always had music playing.
She began to take singing lessons and from there, India began to hone her skills as a vocalist and as a performer, becoming a regular singer at weekly open mic nights. As a result, she matured her vocal skills and boosted her confidence on stage. Falling in love with singing and bringing music into people’s lives, India narrowed in on her goal of becoming a full-time musician. She took on multiple responsibilities, busking on the street to spread the word about her music, working side jobs, and recording music in her free time. With little time to do ‘normal’ teenage activities like go to the beach or hang out, India has few regrets and told an interviewer at NAS, “looking back, I am so glad that my mum gave me this crazy work ethic.”
Today, it is her unique sound that makes her a distinctive talent in the pop music industry. Creating a blend of genres, her cool, pop music is notable for its melodic and catchy undertones and has allowed her to make a lasting impression in Australia’s music scene. Currently, she is represented by LA-based Symba Music Group and has traveled to California to work with names such as Chizzy Stephens and Kyle Moorman—producers for Justin Bieber and P!nk, respectively. In the company of such remarkable figures, her potential promises to rise.
Inspired by the work of musicians including Yebba, Nessa Barrett, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey, India’s relatable sound appeals to fans of Billie Eilish and Gracie Abrams. Her singles ‘Pray’ and ‘Venomous’ have garnered her attention and accolades as she brings listeners into intimate and personal thoughts through her lyrics, casting a dark and loving theme on her work.
As a creative with many talents, India’s passion for singing is accompanied by a love for cooking, dancing, photography, and filmmaking that make her a well-rounded artist. Has she had a grand plan all along that has led her to reach the success of her dreams? Not really, “I love working and travelling for music and just figuring it out as I go” the artist told NAS. She dreams that the next chapter will take her to the US, closer to her management, and that as her style and tastes continue to evolve and grow, she will be able to consistently impact and inspire other young artists to pursue their creative dreams.
