Just American News got a chance to interview author Demeka Vines in regard to her book ‘Healing the Hurt of Yesterday: Embracing Freedom for Tomorrow‘. We got insights into her book, her source of inspiration and much more.
Q: Welcome. How are you doing?
Demeka Vines: Thank you so much for having me! I’m doing well, considering everything. It’s been a transformative journey, and I’m so grateful to be here today to share my story and to connect with people who may find healing through it. It’s been a long road, but it’s one that I continue to walk with hope and faith.
Q: Your book is now available on your website. What inspired you to share your personal journey of resilience and transformation in your book, and what do you hope readers will gain from your story?
Demeka Vines: My story is one that, in many ways, I’ve lived with in silence for so long. But I realized that my experiences—my childhood of abuse, trauma, and the heartbreak of losing my sister to suicide—could offer hope and healing to others who might be walking through similar darkness. I wanted to show that no matter how deep the hurt, transformation is possible. Through faith, through strength, and through leaning on others, healing is a journey, not a destination. I hope readers will find the courage to heal, to face their own pain, and ultimately to embrace the restoration that can come from Christ.
Q: Faith seems to play a central role in your story. How did your faith evolve throughout your experiences, and what role did it play in your healing and deliverance?
Demeka Vines: Faith has been the anchor through everything I’ve gone through. Early on, I questioned so much—why did this happen? Where was God in all this pain? But over time, as I processed my grief and anger, I realized that my faith wasn’t about having all the answers. It was about trusting that God was with me, even in the darkest moments. My healing didn’t happen overnight, but through the strength of Christ, I found peace where there once was chaos, hope where there once was despair. The healing process was painful, but it was also a restoration of my faith in a God who never leaves, even when we don’t understand His plans.
Q: Writing a book like Healing the Hurt of Yesterday can be a deeply personal and therapeutic process. How did writing this book impact your own healing journey, and what was the most rewarding part of sharing your story with the world?
Demeka Vines: Writing the book was incredibly healing for me—it was a form of therapy, almost like putting the pieces of my soul back together. There were moments of deep pain and sorrow as I relived the tragedies and traumas, but there were also moments of deep joy as I reflected on how far I’ve come. The most rewarding part has been hearing from readers who have reached out to tell me how my story touched them. Knowing that my vulnerability and honesty have given someone else permission to heal and speak out about their own pain is the greatest gift.
Q: What’s next? Which book or project are you working on now?
Demeka Vines: Right now, I’m focusing on creating more resources for people who are struggling with trauma and grief. I’m working on a companion workbook for Healing the Hurt of Yesterday, which will help readers reflect on their own journeys, explore forgiveness, and find healing through practical steps. I’m also planning a follow-up project that dives deeper into the themes of restoration, joy, and embracing your future, even after experiencing the worst of what life can throw at you. There’s so much more I want to share, and I’m excited to see where God leads next.
Q: Finally, as we ask all our guests on Jukebox Mind, do you have any closing thoughts that you would like to share with the world and our readers?
Demeka Vines: I want to say to anyone reading this—no matter where you are in your journey, no matter how broken or lost you feel, there is always hope. Your past does not define you. You are not your trauma, your pain, or your mistakes. You are loved, and you are worthy of healing. Don’t be afraid to take that first step toward your restoration. Trust that God will meet you where you are, and He will lead you into the light. It’s okay to take it one day at a time, and it’s okay to ask for help. You are not alone.
